The number of independent or solo practices is decreasing as physicians turn toward hospital employment. However, some specialists still prefer to strike out on their own.
Here are the six specialists most likely to own a solo practice, according to Jackson Healthcare's 2014 national physician survey:
• Dermatologists —55 percent
• Ophthalmologists — 43 percent
• Behavioral health specialists — 34 percent
• Women's health specialists — 29 percent
• Primary care specialists — 28 percent
• Musculoskeletal specialists — 27 percent
