Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Fla., is adding a stem cell center, according to a Gulf Breeze News report.
Here are five things to know:
1. The city seeded The Andrews Regenerative Medicine Cell Center with a $350,000 donation and the center gathered millions from other donors.
2. The center will include a lab to harvest stem cells to treat and cure many diseases. Therapies at the center include platelet-rich plasma and potentially bone marrow aspirate concentrate.
3. Adam Anz, MD, leads the center. He aims to pioneer "the translation from basic science to clinical proven practice," according to the article. To demonstrate the technology, Dr. Anz harvested plasma from his own knee in a videotape demonstration and another physician prepared the PRP injection and then performed the guided therapy to soothe arthritis.
4. Physicians and researchers at the center are enrolling patients in a study comparing PRP to bone marrow aspirate for osteoarthritis with a $250,000 grant. The study will last two years and include 150 patients.
5. Dr. Anz is working with Malaysian physician Dr. Khay Yong Saw to enhance the therapy offerings at the Stem Cell Center. The research studies are expected to bring patients from across the country and could have an economic impact on Gulf Breeze.
