Google granted access to 1.6M patients' data — 5 insights

Practice Management

Google DeepMind, a United Kingdom-based artificial intelligence firm, received access to 1.6 million patients' healthcare data, according to The Guardian.

Here are five insights:

1. Royal Free NHS Trust granted DeepMind access to patient information from Barnet General Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and Royal Free Hospital.

2. The information reveals the number of HIV-positive patients, drug overdoses, abortions and other patient data from the past five years.

3. The patient information will be encrypted, but patients will not know if their data is shared.

4. DeepMind is collaborating with NHS hospitals to create software alerting staff of patients at risk of death from kidney failure.

5. Opponents argue this collaboration is another overstep by Google in the healthcare sector.
