The best & worst social media practices for physicians

Practice Management

Social media is exceedingly important in bringing in new patients.

Physician's Money Digest lays out the do's and don'ts for physicians when using social media.

Here are three best practices:

1. Make posts relevant to audience. Post information patients will find meaningful. When publishing content, ensure it is not too clinically focused so patients can readily understand the information.

2. Post with a purpose. Know what you want to achieve through social media. While some physicians may want to expand their patient base, others may use social media to educate the public.

3. Stand out. You can differentiate yourself from other providers by posting video tutorials or making posts relevant to a certain niche of patients.

Here are two worst practices:

1. Posting too much. Quantity should not outweigh quality. One very substantial quote may serve your goals better than 10 posts from which viewers won't draw meaning.

2. Disregarding HIPAA. Do not post about specific patients and remember to keep your posts within HIPAA's regulations.
