Medscape surveyed 157 physicians and 170 medical students about sexual harassment in the workplace. Fifty-four percent of the physicians and 66 percent of the medical students were women.
Here are six things to know:
1. Of those polled, 71 percent of female physicians reported experiencing sexual harassment in training or medical practice.
2. Twenty-five percent of male physicians reported being sexual harassed.
3. In total, half of physicians reported being sexually harassed. Thirty-two percent of those who experienced sexual harassment said it impacted their career advancement.
4. Of the medical students surveyed, 54 percent reported being sexually harassed. Broken down into gender, 72 percent of female medical students and 19 percent of male medical students experienced sexual harassment.
5. One in four medical students who were sexually harassed reported the incident impacted their career advancement.
6. Those surveyed also noted where the sexual harassment occurred:
• Medical school — 41 percent
• Residency — 54 percent
• Post-residency practice — 56 percent
