Doctors for America, Physicians for Reproductive Health and Physicians for Social Responsibility, among other physician groups, joined the Women's March on Jan. 21, according to Medscape.
The marchers organized in support of equality for women. Groups marched in Washington, D.C., as well as large cities and small towns around the world. Why did physicians join in?
Kyle Ragins, MD, a board member for Doctors for America, coordinated more than 100 members of the organization to march in their white coats. He told Medscape that he marched because he believes women's health is in greater danger than it has been in the past. He also felt the prestige of physicians marching was important for lawmakers to note, as "it's not just a bunch of wacky liberal hippie people out here."
Family physician Isabel Chen, MD, marched because she feels healthcare is a "basic human right."
Members of Physicians for Reproductive Health joined the march, as Congress has threatened to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive healthcare to women.
