Speaker Paul Ryan, HHS secretary Tom Price, MD and two House committee chairman shared their ACA replacement plan on Feb. 16, 2017, The New York Times reports.
Here are seven highlights:
1. The replacement plan will introduce tax credits to pay for individual insurance as well as federal payment cuts to the states with expanded Medicaid.
2. House Republicans commented they would not take coverage away from those who received care under Medicaid expansions.
3. The plan also included elements of reworking Medicaid into an "open-ended entitlement program designed to cover all health care needs," according to NYT.
4. Unlike the ACA's subsidies, which fluctuate depending on income, the new plan would offer fixed tax credits that increase as a person ages.
5. GOP leaders also want to enable insurance coverage across state lines.
6. The Republican leaders failed to mention statistics regarding Americans who would lose or gain coverage under their plan, and they didn't address how the legislation would be funded.
7. President Donald Trump believes an ACA replacement plan is in motion now that Dr. Price has been confirmed, The Hill reports. He tweeted this morning: "Despite the long delays by the Democrats in finally approving Dr. Tom Price, the repeal and replacement of ObamaCare is moving fast!"
