How lipid and statin impact revision surgery rate after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair — 5 observations

Practice Management

A study recently presented at the AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego showed statin use lowers the risk for failure of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair requiring revision surgery.

Here are five things to know:

1. The researchers analyzed association between hyperlipidernia with failure of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair requiring revision surgery.

2. Patients with moderate or high LDL levels had a much higher rate of revision surgery compared to those with normal LDL levels.

3. Those with moderate or high LDL levels who had been prescribed statins had similar revision rates to patients with normal LDL levels.

4. Researchers concluded patients with moderate or high total cholesterol and LDL levels are at a higher risk of failed arthroscopic rotator cuff repair requiring revision surgery.

5. Patients who were prescribed statin didn't have a much higher risk of requiring revision surgery.
