Hoag Orthopedic Institute releases annual report: 7 things to know

Hoag Orthopedic Institute released the 2017 Outcomes Report, its fifth annual report, outlining infection rates, volume and other information.

"As many healthcare organizations strive to improve their quality of care, drive innovation and provide value for their patients, Hoag Orthopedic Institute is the forefront and going even further by being transparent," said Robert Gorab, MD, chief medical officer of HOI. Here are seven key points form the report:

 

1. Inpatient volume hit 4,662 last year, up from 4,505 in 2015 and 3,855 in 2012. Outpatient same day surgery volume for select orthopedic cases was 7,718 last year, down slightly from 2015. Total procedure volume at the hospital was 5,553 last year.

 

2. In 2016, HOI reported 1,633 inpatient hip cases with a 2.4 day average length of stay.

 

3. HOI had 1,651 inpatient knee replacements last year, with 1,450 being primary knee replacements. The average length of stay was 2.1 days.

 

4. The breakdown of 1,171 inpatient spine cases at HOI last year was:

 

• Cervical fusion: 224
• Thoracic fusion: 27
• Lumbosacral fusion: 406
• Disc excision: 324
• Kyphoplasty: 104
• Other: 86

 

The average length of stay for inpatient spine procedures was 2.2 days.

 

5. The readmission rate for total hip and knee replacement surgery was 2.4 percent, compared to a national average of 4.6 percent. The complication rate after total knee and hip replacement was 1.6 percent, compared to a national average of 3 percent.

 

6. The fall rate per 1,000 patient days at HOI was 1.5 last year, compared to the national average of 7.3 for orthopedic patients. Perioperative pulmonary embolism/deep vein thrombosis rate was 2.9 for the 2017 fiscal year at HOI, compared with the 5.3 national average.

 

7. There were 8,382 ambulatory procedures performed in 2016 at HOI surgery centers. The procedure breakdown is:

 

• Pain management: 38.22 percent
• Wrist/hand/finger: 21.55 percent
• Knee: 20.75 percent
• Shoulder: 15.22 percent
• Foot/ankle: 4.47 percent
• Hip: 0.08 percent
