5 vacation spots physicians say are worth your miles

Practice Management

Medscape asked physicians about their greatest vacations.

Here are some vacation spots you don't want to miss:

1. The Adirondacks, N.Y.: Nora Klein, MD, a pediatrician in Houston, said the Adirondacks is one of New York's "best-kept vacation secrets." The mountain range spans 160 miles wide and 1 mile high, earning the title as the United State's largest park. Find a trail among the more than 2,000 miles and take in the forests and waterfalls.

2. Homer, Alaska: Portland, Ore.-based psychiatrist Jeffery Young, MD, nodded to Homer as a perfect vacation spot. It encapsulates outdoor luxuries to kayak, bear watch and hike while also offering great seafood and shops.

3. Bonaire: Don't miss out on the Dutch island of Bonaire, which is home to the best-preserved Caribbean coral reef. Richard Craig, MD, a surgeon in Saint Joseph, Mo., recommended travelers stay in Harbour Village, a five-star resort equipped with a private beach and freshwater swimming pools.

4. Tanzania: Mount Vernon, Ill.-based radiologist P.C. Shekar, MD, named Tanzania as the place to go. Make sure to go on an African safari in the Serengeti National Park or climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

5. Easter Island: Check out Easter Island, a triangular island west of Chile topped with three extinct volcanoes, with a recommendation from Martin Kane, MD, an Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based psychiatrist. The landscape will amaze, as it's riddled with more than 800 stone heads.
