University of Southern California to open center for convergent bioscience with $50M donation: 5 key points

With a $50 million donation from Gary Michelson, MD, the Los Angeles-based University of Southern California is opening the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.

Here are five key points:

 

1. The Michelson Center will bring together expertise from biological sciences at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, medical doctors and researchers from Los Angeles-based Keck School of Medicine of USC and engineering skills from USC Viterbi School of Engineering in Los

Angeles.

 

2. Dr. Michelson is a retired spine surgeon with more than 950 product patents throughout the world.

 

3. The center will open in the fall of 2017 along with the USC Village, a $700 million residential and retail complex in Los Angeles.

 

4. In San Diego, the university also operates a center for Alzheimer's research and a virtual military social work program.

 

5. The university is looking to partner with other academic centers across the country.
