University of Washington in Seattle researchers have developed a virtual reality game called "Snow World" that helps patients manage pain, according to a Q13 Fox Seattle-Tacoma report.
According to the researchers, there is a great deal of research that shows that distraction can take the edge off of pain. The game decreases the patient's need for strong narcotic medications.
Military burn centers have also been collaborating with the UW researchers to test the game in treatment of combat burns. Research has shown that patients report less pain while playing and MRI scans show that the game reduces the brain's pain signals.
