Indiana State Senator Drafts Legislation to Restrict Opioid Prescriptions

Pain Management

Sen. Ron Grooms of Indianapolis has drafted legislation that is aimed at changing the way pain clinics operate statewide, according to an Evansville Courier & Press report.
Currently, Indiana has three laws regulating the prescription of oxycodone and other opioids. Physicians are free to prescribe any amount of these to a patient as long as there is no harm to the patient or violation of laws. Senate Bill 246, Sen. Groom's legislation, aims at restricting these prescriptions and ensuring that patients with chronic pain are given alternative treatments.

The bill will require that each patient have a medical treatment plan that does not lead to long-term addiction. It will also require that patients receive alternative treatment options such as physical therapy or surgery.

The bill has been assigned to the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee, according to the report.
