Spine Surgery Leader to Know: Dr. Robert Isaacs of Duke University Medical Center

Robert E. Isaacs, MD, is a neurosurgeon and director of spine surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., as well as an associate professor of surgery at Duke. He was previously the head of minimally invasive spine surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Florida Spine Institute in Weston. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and North American Spine Society. He also has working relationships with six different companies in the spine industry, including MedShape, Minispine and NuVasive.

Dr. Isaacs' clinical interests include back injuries, cervical herniated discs, cervical spine disorders, degenerative spine, lumbar degenerative disc disease, minimally invasive spine surgery, neurosurgical procedures, spinal oncology and scoliosis.

 

Dr. Isaacs' research interests focus on the effects of spine surgery on back musculature and its functionality, endoscopic and minimally invasive treatment strategies for addressing spinal problems and the identification of means to help limit the approach-related morbidity of spinal surgery.

 

Dr. Isaacs earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his residency in neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He has also completed a clinical spine fellowship at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch at Rush University.
