Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Charles Branch of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center

Charles Branch, MD, is the professor and chair of neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., an academic medical center. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurosurgery and he co-founded the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence of Wake Forest University. He previously served as editor-in-chief of The Spine Journal.
Dr. Branch's specializes in the treatment of spinal diseases and brain tumors, particularly stenosis, spondylolisthesis and herniated discs. He was instrumental in acquiring a gamma knife for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in 1999. His current research interests focuses on the impact and outcomes with minimally invasive lumbar fusion technology.

"The most fulfilling aspects of my career are balanced between the opportunity to develop new lumbar fusion and minimally invasive technology and the training of young neurosurgeons who have become dedicated spine surgeons," said Dr. Branch in a Becker's Spine Review article. "Couple this with leadership roles in NASS and the American Board of Neurological Surgery and I have helped bring the fields of neurospine and orthospine closer together."

Dr. Branch earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and a clinical fellowship in neurological surgery at the University of California San Francisco.
