Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Richard Wohns of South Sound Surgery

Richard N.W. Wohns, MD, is the founder, president and neurosurgeon at South Sound Surgery in Puyallup, Wash. He is also the founder of NeoSpine in Nashville. Tenn., a company that develops outpatient spine surgery centers which has been acquired by Symbion. He is an associate clinical professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Wohns specializes in neurosurgery including outpatient and minimally invasive spine surgery. His subspecialties also include complex spine surgery and cervical and lumbar disc arthroplasty. He is one of the first neurosurgeons in the United States qualified to perform the revolutionary XLIF technique for minimally invasive lumbar fusions

Dr. Wohns is a member of American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Lateral Access Surgeons and Washington State Association of Neurological Surgeons. He was also the medical director of the Ultima Thule Everest Expedition in 1984, where he performed high altitude brain research.

Dr. Wohns earned his medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. He completed a postgraduate fellowship in neuroradiology at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, England and his residency at the University of Washington in Seattle.
