Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Jens Chapman of UW Medicine

Jens R. Chapman, MD, is the interim chair of the department of orthopedics and sports medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is also holder of the HansJoerg Wyss Endowed Chair of Spine Surgery at the university. He is a part of the spine service faculty at Puget Sound Veterans Administration Medical Center in Seattle.
Dr. Chapman specializes in spinal surgery from minimally invasive surgeries to major reconstructive surgeries. His research interests include the evaluation of techniques and materials for spine and trauma surgery. He has written two books The Spine Manual and Spinal Cord Injuries. He has also been on the FDA's advisory panel for spinal devices since 1997.

"The future appears bright with the evolution of minimally invasive decompression techniques and artificial disc replacements," said Dr. Chapman in a UWMC Breakthrough article in 2003.

Dr. Chapman earned his medical degree at Technische Universitaet Muenchen in Munich, Germany. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Texas - Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and completed a fellowship in traumatology and spine surgery at Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center, both in Seattle.
