Joshua Bederson, MD, a neurosurgeon at New York City-based Mount Sinai Hospital, is the first to use Germany-based Leica Microsystems' CaptiView.
Here are six highlights:
1. CaptiView is a microscope image injection system using virtual reality imaging.
2. Using CaptiView, surgeons view virtual reality imaging overlaid on the brain through an eyepiece. Surgeons can see images of a patient's original CT scans or MRIs superimposed on the patient's brain during microscopic surgery.
3. The heads-up display also offers neurovascular and fiber-track information in 2D and 3D dimensions. Surgeons may switch eyepiece views, viewing live and preoperative anatomical images.
4. The technology includes Germany-based Brainlab's Cranial 3.1 Navigation Software and Leica's M530 OH6 microscope. CaptiView is used in conjunction with Surgical Theater's Surgical Navigation Advanced Platform, 3D visualization technology.
5. Dr. Bederson, who specializes in skull-base and cerebrovascular surgery, helped develop the technology. He owns Surgical Theater equity.
6. He completed his microneurosurgery fellowship at University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland and his neurovascular fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
"This next-generation augmented virtual reality tool provides real-time information in ways never before realized," said Dr. Bederson.
