Surgeons at Detroit-based Henry Ford Hospital became the first in Michigan to perform spine surgery using OnPoint's AR Spine System.
The team of surgeons was led by neurosurgeon Muwaffak Abdulhak, MD, according to a Sept. 17 news release.
Augmented reality and OnPoint's system superimposes surgical guides and virtual implants onto the patient using see-through display technology.
The technology is an alternative to robotic assistance and fluoroscopy, which uses a continuous X-ray beam to create real-time video images.
Using AR spine systems can lead to higher accuracy compared to existing surgery methods, the release said.
