A Texas neurosurgeon settled allegations he billed Medicare for spine procedures he didn't perform, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas said Nov. 27.
Rajesh Bindal, MD, allegedly billed for the surgical implantation of neurostimulator devices from March 16, 2021, to April 22, 2022, according to a news release. Those procedures usually require an operating room and are more invasive.
But Dr. Bindal was accused of giving patients devices for electro acupuncture, which requires a minimally invasive procedure and taping the device behind their ears. The procedures were done in Dr. Bindal's clinic, the release said. In some cases, a device sales representative or physician assistant allegedly performed the procedures that were billed as surgeries.
Dr. Bindal is paying $2 million to resolve the allegations.
