Alex Vaccaro, MD, PhD, president of Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, has been recognized as the top-rated expert in spine care from 2011 to 2021 by Expertscape, an online platform that ranks people and institutions according to their expertise in diseases, medical conditions and treatments.
Since 2011, Dr. Vaccaro has published 300 publications and contributions to the field of spine, according to Expertscape, which examined medical publications indexed in the National Library of Medicine's Medline database.
Dr. Vaccaro has more than 900 peer-reviewed and 200 non-peer-reviewed publications on topics including innovations in cervical spine trauma, traumatic brain injuries in U.S. football players and predictors of prolonged opioid use after lumbar fusion.
Rothman spine surgeons Chris Kepler, MD, Greg Schroeder, MD, and Alan Hilibrand, MD, were ranked sixth, 23rd and 43rd in the world, respectively.

"My colleagues and I did not enter into this field for the individual accolades, but to take care of those who often suffer from debilitating spine conditions. We truly feel privileged that we are able to do so."
Rothman physicians perform more than 6,100 spine surgeries a year across Greater Philadelphia and the New York metropolitan area.Next summer, the practice will launch its spine program in Central Florida.
