Lieutenant Commander Leah Brown, MD, a Navy orthopedic surgeon, has received a Bronze Star for the care she provided during her recent deployment to Afghanistan, according to a NavyTimes report.
Lt. Cmdr. Brown received the honor for leading the female medical team of three Navy medical personnel and one Air Force nurse. She provided care for men and boys, but was lauded for improving the care of Afghan women. Traditional Afghan culture mandates that women only receive medical care from female providers and the area was lacking in access.
Lt. Cmdr. Brown treated broken bones and burns.
