In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers from Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and Boston Medical Center examined the outcomes of total shoulder arthroplasty in obese patients.
The researchers examined 76 total shoulder arthroplasty patients divided into groups of normal body mass index, overweight and obese.
- Obesity did not have a negative effect on the short-term improvement of shoulder function.
- The group of normal BMI patients showed improvement of overall physical function after the procedure, while the overweight and obese patients did not.
- One deep infection occurred in the group of overweight patients.
