Olawale Sulaiman, MD, PhD, of New Orleans-.based Ochsner Health System, performed the first minimally invasive spine surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to Information Nigeria.

1. Dr. Sulaiman performed the surgery at EuraCare Specialist Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos State, Nigeria.
2. He commented the surgery was successful, relieving the patient of symptoms.
3. Dr. Sulaiman said he wants to bring MIS to other Sub-Saharan African countries, with plans to open medical branches.
4. Dr. Sulaiman was born in Nigeria.
5. He completed his complex nerve reconstruction fellowship at Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University and his complex spine surgery fellowship at Milwaukee-based Medical College of Wisconsin.
