Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Dan Murrey of OrthoCarolina

News and Analysis

As the CEO of OrthoCarolina, Dan Murrey, MD, is committed to serving his community, through both his orthopedic practice and a number of local civic and community organizations. In a 2010 interview with Becker's Orthopedic & Spine Review, Dr. Murrey called dedication to the community a key to OrthoCarolina's success. To him, this dedication takes several different forms — providing coverage for nearby hospitals' emergency departments, providing residency and fellowship training to physicians, accepting indigent-care patients and giving to charities and other medical-related groups in the area.

"It's not enough to say we gave at the office," Dr. Murrey said. "I challenge all of our partners to find a way to give back to the community."

OrthoCarolina is an independent orthopedic practice based in Charlotte, N.C. With 80 physicians, 15 locations and 800 employees, it offers comprehensive orthopedic care including foot and ankle, hand, hip and knee, shoulder and elbow, spine, sports medicine and pediatrics. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of Miller Orthopaedic Group and Charlotte Orthopedic Specialists, two of the region's largest and oldest orthopedic practices.

Dr. Murrey received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a Master's of Public Policy from JFK School of Government, Harvard University. He is a board-certified orthopedic spinal surgeon and a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Cervical Spine Research Society and the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Murrey said that patients generally remember the personal attention they receive, and therefore practices should put customer satisfaction front and center. "For us to provide a meaningful alternative over time, we have to create a patient experience that is far beyond what they can get at a hospital-based physician practice," Dr. Murrey said. "Patients can't always tell the difference, frankly, in how good the clinical quality is. They only have their experience. They can judge service quality much better than clinical quality."

Scott Becker, JD, CPA, of McGuireWoods, calls Dr. Murrey a "smart and clear thinking leader" who "has done a great job of driving a truly integrated orthopedic group.
