Douglas Donofrio, a former sales director for device company Exactech, has pleaded guilty to running a kickback scheme which induced orthopedic surgeons to use the company's orthopedic implants from 2002-2008, according to a MassDevice news report.
Mr. Donofrio encouraged surgeons to use Exactech's hip and knee implants by offering them consulting arrangements. He also admitted to falsifying quarterly reports to disguise payments to the physicians, according to the news report.
As a result of his guilty plea, Mr. Donofrio managed to avoid prison but has been sentenced to five years' probation and $56,000 in fines.
