U.S. News & World Report has named its top 50 orthopedic hospitals in the U.S. for 2023 and 2024, including four hospitals in Pennsylvania.
Here are some of the top leaders at the four best orthopedic hospitals in Pennsylvania:
Michele Volpe previously spent 23 years as CEO of the Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian hospital in Philadelphia, the 20th best orthopedic hospital in the U.S., according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Ms. Volpe was recently named chief operating officer of the entire Penn Medicine system, so the system is still looking to fill the Penn Presbyterian CEO position. Kevin Majoney serves as CEO of the entire Penn Medicine system, originally joining in 1996.
Brian Nester, DO, serves as CEO of the Lehigh Valley Health Network. Allentown-based Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest ranked 27th on the list of the best orthopedic hospitals in the U.S. Dr. Nester has served as president and CEO since 2014. He first joined Lehigh in 1998, and has held several leadership positions during his tenure. He is also trained in emergency medicine.
Alexander Vaccaro, MD, PhD, is the president of Rothman Orthopaedics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia, the 34th best hospital for orthopedics in the U.S. He has served as president since 2014 and is also a professor and chairman in the department of orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. He has served for other orthopedic specialty organizations, including the North American Spine Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Don McKenna is the interim president of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the 50th best hospital for orthopedics in the U.S. He first joined the system in 2020 and was named interim president in July 2023. When a full-time president is selected, Mr. McKenna will return to his role as West Shore Regional president of Hampden and Holy Spirit medical centers. Previously, he served as president and CEO of two health systems, including Jupiter (Fla.) Health and St. Mary's Healthcare System in Athens, Ga.
