Orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. earn an average of $558,000 annually, according to Medscape's 2024 "Orthopedist Compensation Report," published May 24.

1. Fifty-one percent of orthopedic surgeons said compensation was a minor factor when choosing their practice specialty.
2. The majority of orthopedic surgeons (72%) said most physicians in the U.S. are underpaid.
3. The minority of orthopedic surgeons (44%) said they are fairly compensated when considering work demands.
4. Orthopedic surgeons saw a 3% decrease in pay in 2024.
5. Fifty-two percent of orthopedic surgeons said they take on side gigs outside their key roles.
6. Only 44% of orthopedic surgeons reported feeling happy with their compensation rates.
7. About 59% of orthopedic surgeons said their income is somewhat or considerably impacted by competing physician practices.
8. Around 52% of orthopedic surgeons said compensation bonuses are available to them.
