A study published in Spine randomly selected 5 percent of Medicare beneficiaries that had undergone decompression surgery for spinal stenosis and analyzed readmission rates. The study found:
• In patients undergoing both decompression and fusion, one-year readmission rate was 9.7 percent and two-year readmission rate was 14.6 percent.
• In patients only undergoing decompression, one- year readmission was 7.2 percent and two-year readmission rate was 12.5 percent.
• Of readmitted patients, including both fusion and non-fusion cohorts, 22 percent received pain management injection, 23 percent decompression and 56 percent fusion.
• In patients that were not readmitted, 25 percent received outpatient pain management injections within the three months following their surgery.
• Overall, spinal stenosis decompression readmission rates were found to be 8 to 10 percent per year.
The study ultimately concluded that fusion does not influence readmission rates.
