St. Cloud Orthopedics' spine surgeon travels to 2018 Olympics as medical advisor: 5 takeaways

Sartell, Minn.-based St. Cloud Orthopedics spine surgeon Joel Shobe, MD, is heading to the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics as a medical advisor for the U.S. short track speed skating team, according to the SC Times.

Here are five takeaways:

 

1. With more than 20 years of experience at St. Cloud Orthopedics, Dr. Shobe will focus on supervising anti-doping testing at the Olympics.

 

2. Dr. Shobe is a member of the International Skating Union, an international sports federation administering ice skating sports.

 

3. Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Shobe is a member of the North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

 

4. He underwent spine surgery fellowship training at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Shobe also completed cervical spine surgery training at Buffalo (N.Y.) General Hospital.

 

5. After earning his medical degree from Chicago-based Northwestern University Medical School, Dr. Shobe completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in Milwaukee.
