Indianapolis-based IU Health appointed Shelly Timmons, MD, PhD, to lead the department of neurosurgery. She will be the first woman to lead the department.

Venita Simpson, MD, became the first black woman to complete a neurosurgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston since the program began in 1956 and is on her way to Portsmouth, Va., to practice neurosurgery with the U.S. Navy.

Christine Hammer, MD, will join Tacoma, Wash.-based CHI Franciscan Health when she completes her spine fellowship at Atlanta-based Emory University School of Medicine at the end of July. In an interview with Becker's, Dr. Hammer outlined why she decided to join CHI Franciscan, what changes she would like to see in spine care and more.
