Dr. Richard Spiro Joins West Penn Hospital: 5 Things to Know

Richard M. Spiro, MD, is joining the medical staff of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a TribLIVE Business report.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Spiro and West Penn Hospital:

1. Dr. Spiro is a neurosurgeon and co-director of the Mars, Pa.-based Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute. Prior to joining the institute, Dr. Spiro spent 14 years practicing at he University of Pittsburgh's Presbyterian Hospital. He has also previously served as director and chief of neurological spine surgery for the department of neurosurgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

 

2. Dr. Spiro is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of American Association of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has a professional interest in general neurosurgery, spinal abnormalities, spinal tumors, revision spinal surgery and complex spine.

 

3.  Dr. Spiro's research interests include hypothermia for spinal cord injury and materials for spinal surgery. He has authored numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

 

4. Dr. Spiro earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile. He completed his residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at UPMC.

 

5. West Penn Hospital is a member of West Penn Allegheny Health System, and was incorporated in 1848 as Pittsburgh's first chartered public hospital. The hospital was the first in Pittsburgh to open an intensive care unit, first to perform a bone marrow transplant and first to build a heliport.
