Washington suspends Dr. Johnny Delashaw's medical license
Former Seattle-based Swedish Health neurosurgeon Johnny Delashaw, MD, has been suspended from practicing medicine in Washington state. After joining Cherry Hill in 2013, Dr. Delashaw brought in 661 inpatient cases, netting the hospital $86 million within his first 16 months. State health regulators began investigating Dr. Delashaw and Swedish Neuroscience Institute at Cherry Hill in February after several complaints were lodged against him. Dr. Delashaw resigned from his post as chair of Swedish Neuroscience Institute on March 1, 2017.
Mazor Q1 revenue jumps 83% with 12 Mazor X orders
Mazor reported $11.7 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2017. Revenue increased 83 percent in the first quarter to $11.7 million, with U.S. revenue driving the growth. U.S. revenue increased 100 percent to $11.2 million. During the first quarter, Mazor received 12 orders for the Mazor X system, compared to four for the Renaissance system during the first quarter of last year. The quarter ended with a backlog of 14 Mazor X systems.
Medtronic's Pat Shrader urges Congress to reform device facility inspections process
Medtronic Vice President for Global Regulatory Affairs Pat Shrader urged Congress to improve medical device manufacturing facility inspections. Ms. Shrader noted companies and facilities are held to different standards based on their respective locations. She advocated for bill H.R. 1736, which proposes to standardize inspection processes.
GOP healthcare bill to move to Senate with House passage
The House passed the revised Republican healthcare bill on May 4. The bill just made it on to the Senate with a 217 to 213 House vote, with no Democrats voting in favor of the legislation.

Smith & Nephew's Q1 revenue flat at $1.1B
Smith & Nephew reported flat revenue of $1.1 billion for the first quarter of the year. The sports medicine sector reported flat revenue at $466 million and the company's reconstruction segment revenue was up 2 percent to $396 million. Smith & Nephew expects revenue to grow 3 percent to 4 percent for 2017.
How many orthopedic physicians are worth over $5M?
A recently released Medscape study revealed more orthopedic physicians are worth over $5 million than any other specialists. Roughly 15 percent of orthopedic physicians are worth over $5 million. Income plays a large role in determining physicians' net worth. Orthopedic physicians earn $489,000 per year, according to the study.
Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics names Dr. Jay Wellons editorial board co-chair
Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics appointed Jay Wellons, MD, to serve as co-chair of its editorial board from April 2017 to April 2018. Dr. Wellons serves as pediatric neurosurgery chief and neurological surgery professor at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In his new role, Dr. Wellons will oversee the journal's editors as well as review articles.
