Mercy Hospital Fort Smith (Ark.) hired two 24-hour neurosurgeons to build out its new neurosciences center, according to the Southwest Times Record.
Here are five notes:
1. The hospital began a $10 million healthcare initiative to raise money for the neurosciences center. The 16,000-square-foot space will allow Mercy Fort Smith to perform various surgeries it otherwise had to transfer.
2. Between 1962 and 2016, Mercy Fort Smith offered 24-hour neurological care. However, now only two neurosurgeons, who are late in their careers, provide care to community members.
3. With the lack of neurological expertise, Mercy Fort Smith had to transfer nearly 2,200 neurological cases annually, including more than 700 neuro-trauma patients and 1,500 spine patients.
4. Husband and wife Ken Foxx, MD, and Kate Foxx, MD, will join the hospital in August. While Mercy Fort Smith is building the neurosciences center, the two will perform spine and back procedures at Mercy Orthopedic Hospital in Fort Smith.
5. Dr. Ken Foxx earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City and completed his residency at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Kate Foxx earned her medical degree from Jagiellonian University’s Collegium Medicum in Krakow, Poland and completed her residency at Strong Memorial Hospital.
