A study recently published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine identified factors that can increase the risk of revision surgery following autologous chrondrocyte implantation.
The authors studied 413 patients after ACI and found 88 patients underwent surgical revision surgery during the average follow-up period. The patients were most likely to receive the revision surgery within two years of the initial procedure.
The factors associated with a higher risk for re-intervention were:
• Female gender
• Previous surgeries in the affected joint
• Previous bone marrow stimulation
• Periosteum patch-covered ACI
