During the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine annual meeting, researchers, including lead author Daryl C. Osbahr, MD, presented the results of a study on the long-term results of ulnar collateral ligament surgery in baseball players.
The study included 256 high school, college and professional-level baseball players. The study's subjects were contacted an average of 12.6 years after UCL reconstruction.
The study found:
• 83 percent of the players were able to return to the same or a higher level of play after the procedure
• 95 percent of the athletes had retired at the 10-year follow up point
• 98 percent still threw for recreation and reported no elbow pain
