Surgeons Discover New Ligament in Human Knee

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

In a recent study published in the Journal of Anatomy, Steven Claes, MD, and John Bellemans, MD, Belgian surgeons, shared the discovery of the anterolateral ligament, according to a Ku Leuven report.

The researchers found that the ALL is present in 97 percent of human knees.

The newly discovered ligament has been linked to ACL injuries. Pivot shift occurring in ACL patients is shown to be caused by an injury to the ALL.
