Study: Outpatient Partial Knee Replacement Can be Safe, Have High Satisfaction

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

After partial knee replacement, discharging appropriately selected patients on the same day as the surgery can be safe and even increase patient satisfaction, according to a study published in The Journal of Arthroplasty.

Surgeons and clinicians at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, Calif., analyzed 160 cases where a particle knee replacement patient at the institute was discharged on the same day as the surgery.

The study found that due to improvements in processes before, during and after surgery, patients can be discharged successfully on the same day and without uncontrolled pain or nausea. Additionally, results showed high patient satisfaction following discharge.
