ACL survival rate & revision factors — 5 key concepts

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

A new study based on the Kaiser Permanente ACLR Registry examines risk factors associated with revision and contralateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. The study results were published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

The researchers examined data from the registry gathered Feb. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2012. There were 17,436 ACL reconstructions evaluated, with 64 percent being male and average age being 27.2 years old. Here are eight findings from the report:

1. Five-year ACL reconstruction survival rate was 95.1 percent.

2. The five-year survival rate for contralateral ACL surgery was 95.8 percent.

3. The researchers reported a statistically significant difference in density of revision procedures between procedures using bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft, hamstring autograft and allograft

4. Factors associated with higher revision rates for ACL reconstruction were:

• Allograft use
• Hamstring allografts
• Male patients
• Younger patients
• Lower body mass index
• White race (as opposed to black race)

5. Factors associated with contralateral ACL reconstruction revision rate were:

• Younger patients
• Female patients
• Lower body mass index
