Tanya Hagen, MD, has passed away at age 45, according to Pittsburgh Sporting News. She became the first female hired as a primary care physician at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's sports medicine complex, and treated athletes at all levels during her career as a physician, according to the report.
Dr. Hagen received her medical degree from Georgetown's School of Medicine and completed her postdoctoral research in female athletic injuries, the prevention and cure of musculoskeletal injuries, concussion prevention and gender-based concussion studies.
As a consultant for the Pittsburgh Steelers' medical team, Dr. Hagen became the first female doctor to travel with a professional NFL team.
Dr. Hagen was also involved with a number of philanthropic pursuits, including serving as a medical and coaching volunteer with the Special Olympics, a healthcare provider in Cameroon, Africa and at homeless shelters.
