Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Physician Discusses Treatment and Return-to-Play for Professional Basketball Player

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Brian Cole, MD, a sports medicine physician at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush and team physician for the Chicago Bulls, recently discussed the treatment and return of Bulls forward Carlos Boozer with Comcast SportsNet, according to a practice news release.

Dr. Cole said that Mr. Boozer's treatment was a collaborative effort with Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush wrist and elbow specialists Mark Cohen, MD, and John Fernandez, MD.

A fracture or a break takes about 6-8 weeks to heal, and Mr. Boozer returned after eight weeks of treatment, Dr. Cole said in the report. The physicians examined Mr. Boozer's x-rays, and Dr. Cole said he was safe to return to play without a heightened risk of re-injury. The rehabilitation efforts included core and upper body strengthening first to keep him basketball-ready.
