Dr. Louis Meeks: Mentor passes away — 5 things to know

Louis W. Meeks, MD, was an orthopedic surgeon and mentor in sports medicine.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Meeks died from pulmonary disease on Sept. 14, 2015, at the age of 78.

 

2. He taught at Harvard Medical School and was the chief of sports medicine at the former Beth Israel Hospital.

 

3. In 2000, he was awarded the Daniel D. Federman Outstanding Clinical Educator award and the Golden Apple Award in 2001 as the teacher of the year.

 

4. At Harvard, he served as course director of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, and he received the outstanding surgery instructor award in 1974 from the senior class of the University of Michigan Medical School.

 

5. In the mid-1960s, Dr. Meeks was drafted into the Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam as a physician, where he performed life-saving trauma and orthopedic surgical procedures, as well as developed new vascular reconstruction procedures.
