Mayfield Harris, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and founding member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, recently died at age 86, according to a Palo Alto Daily News report.
During his career, Dr. Harris was the team physician for the San Jose Earthquakes professional soccer team and Stanford (Calif.) University, as well as professional athletes. Harris also served as a field surgeon during the Korean War and spent time treating patients in Peru, Nicaragua Ceylon and a Navajo reservation.
Dr. Harris earned his medical degree at Stanford University and completed a fellowship in pediatric medicine at Harvard University in Boston. He also completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Southern California.
