Colorado Bill Focuses on Youth Concussion Management

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

A bill proposed to the Colorado State Legislature, named for a 14-year-old high school football player who died as a result of a concussion, would require coaches in Colorado schools, sports clubs and recreation centers to successfully complete annual training on identifying concussions in youth athletes, according to a Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children Youth Sports Medicine Institute news release.

The training would be free online. The bill also requires coaches to remove athletes from competition if they exhibit concussion-like symptoms and only allow them to participate again after clearance from a medical professional.

The Rocky Mountain Youth Sports Medicine Institute has offered free concussion management training to more than 1,500 coaches, parents and players over the past year.
