Q30 Sports Science is taking its concussion preventing collar based device through another round of investigatory study, USA Today reports.
The Q Collar was used by football players at St. Xavier and Archbishop Moller High Schools last season in an attempt to get quantifiable data on its effectiveness. The St. Xavier players were outfitted with the device, and at the end of the season, the players showed "far less brain slosh," than the Archibishop Moller players.
Here's what you need to know:
1. Q30 is funding another study with the focus switching to girls soccer. Cincinnati-area programs Seton and Madeira were both selected for the study. Seton High School athletes will wear the collar while Madeira High School athletes will serve as the control group.
2. Director of Research for the Division of Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Gregory Myer, MD, said the new study could be as impactful as the 2016 study, because of female athletes tendencies to respond to lower-level head impacts with concussive symptoms.
3. If the device conclusive reduces concussive head trauma in a second sport, it would further the argument that the device should undergo further testing.
4. The Q Collar is worn around the back of the neck. It stimulates the jugular vein to imitate yawning and limits the risk of direct impact in contact sports.
