Johnny Lin, MD, a foot and ankle specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, recently spoke on Comcast SportsNet about the best treatment options for athletes who sustain a sprained ankle, according to a practice news release.
Dr. Lin discussed Chicago Bulls' Carlos Boozer's recovery from an ankle sprain. If the ligament injury is not severe (Grade 1 or 2), athletes can push themselves harder to return-to-play. Rest, ice, compression and elevation are the most common treatment methods, according to the Comcast SportsNet report.
Putting weight to the ankle can help stimulate a quick and normal healing response, said Dr. Lin in the report. Most weekend warriors don't need to see a physician for a sprain injury. However, chronic ankle injuries could mean a loose ligament, according to the report.
