Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards has been placed on the 60-day disabled list after injuring his right arm in his first start since undergoing a stem cell procedure to avoid Tommy John surgery, according to Fox Sports.
Here are five things to know:
1. Mr. Richards underwent stem cell treatment to avoid Tommy John surgery last season.
2. He exited his first start this season due to right bicep stiffness on April 5.
3. A scan led to a diagnosis of irritation to his right arm's cutaneous nerve on April 7.
4. The Angels announced Mr. Richards' most recent assessment and exam showed mild improvement in bicep strength and irritation of the cutaneous nerve.
5. Supervised by team physician Steve Yoon, MD, of Los Angeles-based Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, the stem cell treatment had initially showed promise, according to USA Today.
