Nicholas Theodore, MD, is the new chairman of the NFL's head, neck and spine committee, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Here are five key points.
1. Composed of independent and NFL-affiliated physicians and scientists, the committee offers the NFL advice on medical policies, procedures and protocols.
2. Dr. Theodore is the Donlin M. Long Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also serves as director of the Johns Hopkins Neurosurgical Spine Center.
3. Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Theodore was chief of the neurological surgery spine section at Phoenix-based Barrow Neurological Institute, where he helped create a state concussion education program. He also served as the team neurosurgeon for the Arizona Cardinals and a consultant to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
4. Dr. Theodore has written 30 book chapters and 180-plus journal articles. He also co-holds 10 patents and has a research emphasis on trauma, spinal cord injuries, robotics and more.
5. He completed his spinal surgery fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
