The National Athletic Trainers' Association awarded James Andrews, MD, its President's Award during their 69th Clinical Symposia & AT Expo, June 28 in New Orleans.

Here's what you should know:

1. Dr. Andrews was recognized for his "unwavering leadership and support" for the athletic trainers association. Dr. Andrews supports the profession and believes trainers add substantial value to healthcare.

2. NATA President Scott Sailor said, "Over his decades of serving athletes, both young and old, Dr. Andrews has become known as not only a caring and compassionate surgeon but, an innovator and trailblazer, constantly striving to improve the care he and his team are able to provide to their patients. He values athletic trainers, but he also stands for what we as athletic trainers stand for — excellent care for our patients.”

3. Dr. Andrews founded the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., in 2007. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatments.

4. Dr. Andrews is also the Tampa Bay Rays' orthopedic medical director.
