3 North Carolina institutions receive $510k grant to study concussions in college athletes — 3 quick notes

Three Winston-Salem, N.C.-based institutions received a combined $510,000 grant to continuing participating in the largest study of college sports-related concussions, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Here are three things to know:

1. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University received the two-year grant.

2. The National Collegiate Athletic Association's Department of Defense Concussion Assessment, Research and Education Consortium study evaluates concussions and repeated head-impact exposures among college athletes at 30 participating NCAA schools.

3. The consortium began in 2014 and has collected data from more than 40,000 college athletes, including more than 3,000 who have had concussions.
